Whitby Town manager Tommy Cassidy brought Alex, the former Gretna, Stranraer, Ilkeston Town and Blyth Spartans defender to Whitby on loan from Cassidy’s former club Workington in February 2011 to help in Whitby’s fight against relegation and Alex made his debut on the 22nd February 2011 in a 6-0 defeat at North Ferriby United and went on to make 17 appearances as Whitby managed to avoid relegation and in July 2011 he signed for the club after his release from Workington, going on to make a further 42 appearances (+ 1 as substitute) in season 2011/12 as Whitby again avoided relegation with a last day victory over Buxton, Alex went on to claim a clean sweep at the end of season awards being named the supporters player of the year, the players player of the year and website player of the year.
Season 2012/13 saw Alex score his first goal for the blue’s in a 4-3 defeat away at AFC Flyde on the 1st September 2012 and went on to score a further 3 goals before the end of the season including a brace in a 3-2 victory away to Grantham Town on the 12th March 2013, making 36 (+ 4 as a substitute) appearances as Whitby finished in 9th place. Alex made his 100th appearance for the club as an 85th minute substitute in a 1-0 away over Stafford Rangers in the last game of that season on Saturday 26th April 2013 before leaving the club to sign for Northern League Division One side Spennymoor United in July 2013. After spells at Crook Town ( loan ), Jarrow Roofing 2014/15-2016/17, Washington (2017/18) Whitby manager Chris Hardy re-signed Alex from Seaham Red Star in July 2018 and handed him his 2nd debut for the club on Saturday 18th August 2018 in the opening game of the 2018/19 season, a 1-0 victory over Buxton at the Turnbull Ground and was a regular in the side going on to make 31 appearances that season as Whitby finished in 11th place. Alex started the first game of the following season 2019/20 a 1-1 home draw with Witton Albion on Saturday 17th August 2019 before injury kept him out of the side missing the next 9 games but he fought his way back into the team and came off the bench to score in a 2-1 away defeat at Stalybridge Celtic on Saturday 7th December 2019 before returning to the starting XI and scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory over league leaders South Shields at the Turnbull Ground on Boxing Day 2019. Alex made his 150th appearance for Whitby on the 8th February 2020 in a 3-1 away victory over Mickleover Sports, he then scored again in the 2-0 away victory over Matlock Town on the 22nd February 2020 going on to make 23 (+ 4 as a substitute) appearances before the season was brought to an end because of the Covid-19 virus, scoring 3 goals. His last appearance for Whitby Town came in the final game played that season a 2-2 draw away to Radcliffe on Saturday 14th March 2020 before leaving the club for pastures new in May 2020.
In total Alex made 158 (9 as a substitute) appearances for Whitby Town scoring 7 goals.
