His home debut was also a sub appearance against Pickering four days later. His first goal for the club came some time later against Spennymoor United on the 28th March 1984 in a 3-0 win in he Northern League.
David left The Blues and be came a travel professional player playing for Mansfield Town. Previous clubs also included Northampton, Halifax, Stockport County, Scarborough, Northallerton & Bishop Auckland. He then returned to Whitby.
During the 1995/96 season he was voted both the supporters and players player of the year. And in 1997 he broke the deadlock in the FA Vase final at Wembley Stadium and was part of the all conquering Whitby squad that won the Northern League in 1996/97. The following season he won a Unibond League Division One medal.
In the 1999/2000 season he again won players and supporters player of the year.
In July 2004 he announced his retirement from the game but the club retained his registration just in case. David’s last game for us was the 16th March 2002 in the home game against Hyde United. Thus bringing his career that started with Whitby to a close with the club.
He player a huge number of games for us; 356 in starting line ups and 15 from the bench totalling 371 and despite his slow start as a goal scorer he notched up 62 goals.
David had became assistant manager over the past years and on the 6th September 2004 he took the reigns as caretaker manager after Harry Dunn departed the club. It would be a tough act to follow for anyone, but David took it to heart and tried. On the 7th October 2004 it was announced that he would be the full manager of Whitby Town FC, until today 8th June 2006.
He spent a total of 640 days in charge of the blues and in this time his record stands thus;
2004/05 – Unibond Premier division 4th place and playoff place.
2005/06 – Unibond Premier division 6th place (just below playoffs)
