Bobby was born in 1913 in Middlesbrough and started his footballing career at South Bank. Bobby became a schoolboy international at the age of 14 and gained three caps. At 15 he then joined his home town club, Middlesbrough, between 1931 and 1947 he made 247 appearances and scored 2 goals. In 1938 Bobby was to face the legendary Stanley Matthews he was told stay close to Matthews and when asked about it he stated, “I respected Stanley’s skill so I just kept my eye on the ball and shuffled him into the corner, this allowing the defence to be ready to manage any eventual cross“. A motor mechanic by trade, he served in the Royal Navy during the war years and assisted Liverpool and Bristol City as a guest when duties permitted. Bobby transferred to Plymouth Argyle in 1948, He made just 20 appearances for Argyle. He retired due to an ankle injury the following year and returned to the the Middlesbrough and began coaching Whitby Town for a 4 years, 10 months, 19 days.

Dogged by ill health in later years, he died in 1987.
